Nadashravana Kriya

Introduction

Nadashravana Kriya refers to listening to mystical sounds arising in Sushumna. As per Tantra Nada is the primordial cause of this universe. In this technique once can experience the cosmic sound Om for himself. This kriya induces laya or absorption resulting in a sense of bliss and joy.

Technique

  • Sit in any meditative position with spine and head erect
  • Close openings of ears with thumbs of both the hands
  • Let other fingers rest either on the top of head or corners of eyes, mouth and nostrils. There is no need to close the nostrils altogether. Let the breathing be normal.
  • Listen to whatever sounds arise in the right year
  • Try to follow subtle sounds with concentrated mind
  • At the same time fix you inner gaze at Ajna chakra and try visualizing a bright light there
  • As you progress you will hear sounds of various natures and finally Anahata sound will be heard

Beginners should do this kriya for 10 minutes gradually increasing the time.

During initial stages you may hear sounds like that of cricket or many meaningless sounds. This is completely normal. After a few day's of practice you will clearly hear heart beat. If this happens then assume that you are going in the right direction. This heart beat may vanish after some time. This is bit frustrating but do not feel discouraged. Soon you will surpass that stage and will hear subtle sounds.

You may feel pain in the hands. You can support your hands on a table if you so wish. After regular practice this pain will disappear.

If you do not hear any sound at all then you can chant Om mantra loudly and concentrate on that sound. After few days you will hear sounds and then you can discontinue chanting Om.

Signs of correct practice

  • Subtle sounds are heard
  • Mind remains absorbed
  • After reasonable practice you will hear sounds even while performing daily duties
  • Sometimes you may hear strange sounds that you never heard before
  • Meditative state is established
  • You may see light at Ajna
  • After a prolonged practice Om is experienced

Signs of erroneous practice

  • Visions start flowing in front of your eyes and you cannot concentrate even after a prolonged practice
  • No sounds are heard
  • You fail to listen subtle sounds
